When Will My Website Show Up In Google Searches?

When building a website or working with clients on SEO projects, they often ask how long it will take to show up (rank) in Google searches. The simple answer is it depends.

If you have a more established website and are redesigning it or working on SEO, you can see results from as early as three to six months. However, it can take between six months to one year for a brand-new website with a new domain name to rank on Google.

This page covers:

  • What is Google indexing and how can I speed it up?
  • What factors affect my Google ranking (where my website will be in a Google search)?
How Long Does It Take To Rank On Google

Google needs to Index your website pages before they can be shown in the search results

What is Google indexing?

It takes Google anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to index a new website and its pages. Indexing means that Google’s robots have crawled your website, analyzed the content and then stored it in the Google index.

Often when a new website is launched the only way to see it in Google is by typing your whole URL in the browser: https://websiteadelaide.com. Only once Google has indexed the website can it be shown in searches.

There is no guarantee that every page of your website will be indexed. If Google thinks that your text and content is too similar to another page on the internet or on your website, it might not get  indexed. Ideally every page of your website should have unique information so that your pages do not compete with each other.

How to speed up Google indexing:

Share your URL (domain name address) to friends, family and clients.  Ask them to type your web address (url) into google. Click on the link and visit each one of the pages on your website. This way Google will notice that your website is starting to get some traffic.

Add your web address to your social media pages, email signature and business pages so it is not hidden in your private accounts. As long as there are links pointing to your website, Google will notice that people are interested in your site. This is the first and most important thing you can do to speed up indexing.

When we launch your website, we add a xml sitemap to Google search console. This enables Google and other search engines to understand your website and all of its pages. An xml sitemap is the best way to guarantee that Google will crawl all your website pages, however, just because your website has been crawled does not mean that Google will index all of your pages..

What Factors Affect My Google Ranking

Google considers hundreds of factors to determine where to rank your website and the process of helping your website get ranked is called search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO can be complex and time-consuming because there are so many parts to the puzzle. And, there is no one size fits all strategy. However, five key things can significantly impact your ability to be shown in the search engine results pages (SERPS).

Website Domain Age

Your domain is your www.address on the website. The longer your domain name has been established on the internet, the better it is for your SEO (providing it has not been blocked or penalised by Google). Google wants to send traffic to websites it trusts, so it can take up to six months for a new website to build authority and appear in the search engine results.

Website Traffic

The more people you can get to visit your website the better. Every visitor counts and builds domain authority which will help your ranking. If you have just built a new website but have done nothing to promote it, you can not expect Google to get excited about your website.

We recommend creating a post on social media announcing the launch of your new website along with a link so people can visit your new website. Also when you are creating social media posts add a link to your website on some of the posts.

Number of website visitors

Website Quality Text Content

What’s written on the pages of your website can have a dramatic effect on your search engine rankings. If you are about to build a new website, unless you have considerable content writing experience, we suggest you hire a copywriter to write your content. A good copywriter will ensure that you have unique, well-structured, high-value content that follows best SEO practices. We recommend Colette at https://greatcontent.com.au/.

A website needs plenty of good quality content to perform well in searches. Websites with minimal content may look beautiful but rarely perform well in the rankings.

Having one target keyword per page on your website is optimal for SEO. If you are a business that offers multiple services like a plumber, we recommend having one page per service, e.g. a page on hot water plumbing, gas plumbing, emergency plumbing etc.

Competition on Google for keywords

If there is a lot of competition in the market, showing up on Google for specific keywords can be challenging. If you are a business with a small SEO or website budget, it is best to target one or two niche keyword phrases or specific long-tail keywords where there is less competition to help your website gain some traction. If you have a single-page website, you are unlikely to rank for multiple keywords.

The lower the competition, the easier it is to rank. However, if you have a single-page website and most of the competition has multiple pages on their website, Google is more likely to rank the larger websites above yours as they are likely to have more in-depth content.

Example of factors that will affect your place in the search results:

Number of competitors in your area

The number of pages the first ranking business has on the web

The number of words per page

Google Business Profile

Having a Google Business Profile (GBP) is a great way to help Google verify your business. A Google business profile is free and will give you plenty of exposure as it will get your business locations shown on the local map listings as well as helping to drive traffic to your website. Google is more likely to trust your website once it has verified your business and knows that it is a registered business with an ABN number.
